| On the evening of Tuesday
7 September, a group of 49 Squadron armourers were returning
from Lincoln on the train having had a 'session' in their local,
possibly the "Adam and Eve" at the top of Lindum Hill
(the licensee of this hostelry happened to be a 49 Squadron Armourer).
Using the ferry to cross over to the Fiskerton side, the short
journey became a boisterous one, and some members fell into the
Witham and became trapped under the ferry. Tragically two airmen
perished in the water before they could be rescued. Both victims
came from the London area; AC.1 George Archie Bown was 32 and
is buried in the City of London Cemetery, Aldersbrook Road and
22 year-old LAC John Desmond
Cousins is in Hampstead Cemetery. |
