| 29 September, 1940: The month
ended in tragedy when at 23.30hrs on this Sunday night, one of
the unit's Hampdens on a training flight, flew into high ground
at Haigh near Wakefield in Yorkshire, whilst in a turn at 1,000ft.
Sadly all three members of the crew were killed. Sgt pilot Fred
Catley (aged 21) and W/Ag Sgt Bert Hastie (aged 21) are buried
in St. John's Churchyard, Scampton. Sgt Bill Nichol (aged 26)
